The Bell Tower at The Elvetham | Wedding Photography Inspiration

Bride and Groom sharing their first kiss inside The Bell Tower at The Elvetham surrounded by candlelight, flowers, silk drapes and stained glass

Nestled in the Hampshire countryside, The Bell Tower at The Elvetham feels like a little world of its own. This former church, now a wonderfully romantic Hampshire wedding venue, is full of character — intimate and atmospheric, with beautiful stonework, soaring ceilings and stained-glass windows that throw the most incredible light into the space.

As a wedding photographer, I had the opportunity to photograph a styled wedding at The Bell Tower at The Elvetham, using both the Bell Tower itself and the surrounding gardens and grounds. What struck me most was just how much could be created within this one space. This wedding venue has atmosphere for DAYS.

From a romantic ceremony beneath the stained glass, to an intimate wedding breakfast, and then out into the gardens for wedding parties, cocktail hour and vibey bride and groom portraits, it offers so many possibilities for couples dreaming up their perfect wedding day.

And, from a photographer’s point of view, the light that dances through this church is rather special.

The Bell Tower at The Elvetham – An Intimate Hampshire Wedding Venue

Despite its history as a former church, The Bell Tower doesn’t feel like a dark or dated old building. It has all the character you would hope for — beautiful stonework, soaring vaulted ceilings and stained glass — but there’s something surprisingly clean and contemporary about the space too. It feels like somewhere that could take on a completely different personality depending on how you chose to style it.

For our shoot, those incredible vaulted ceilings were draped with acres of silk by @drap.d_ alongside romantic, dreamy florals by @forestandtheflowers. The whole space was filled with candlelight, making it feel incredibly romantic and atmospheric.

The Bell Tower is naturally quite a dark space, but it never felt gloomy. Instead, the stained-glass window, together with the beautiful windows on either side, creates this extraordinary concentration of natural light around the ceremony area. As a photographer, that combination of deep shadow and directional light is an absolute dream.

One of my favourite features is the balcony overlooking the room. Being able to photograph from above gives you a completely different perspective on the ceremony and really shows off the scale of the space. I can also imagine it being a wonderful vantage point for guests, depending on how your wedding is arranged.

For me, though, much of the charm is simply how this place feels. The Bell Tower at The Elvetham is literally dripping with vibes. It genuinely feels like your own little private church, tucked away in the Hampshire countryside.

A Wedding Ceremony at The Bell Tower at The Elvetham

Although our styled shoot wasn’t arranged as a complete ceremony with an aisle and guest seating, standing inside The Bell Tower I could immediately imagine how beautifully the space could work for one.

The length of the room naturally draws your eye towards the ceremony area beneath the stained-glass window, and I can imagine rows of guests creating an aisle through the centre towards it. With the soaring vaulted ceiling above and natural light coming through the windows around the ceremony space, there is already so much architecture and atmosphere to work with before you add anything else.

Throw a bunch of flowers at the space and WOW.

Our shoot went gloriously romantic — tall florals, masses of silk draping and candlelight — and showed just how much styling The Bell Tower can take. But I could equally imagine it stripped right back, allowing the old stone, stained glass and architecture to become the backdrop. I’m a natural minimalist myself, so my eye is always drawn to spaces that can hold their own before any styling is added.

For me, that’s a huge part of the appeal of a Bell Tower wedding. You aren’t starting with a blank function room and trying to manufacture atmosphere. The atmosphere is already there — you just get to decide what you want to do with it.

Romantic and whimsical? The Bell Tower has got your back. Sleek and editorial? This wedding venue will provide. Rustic and cinematic? Consider it done.

I would love to show you more from my day at The Bell Tower and some of my favourite images can be found in my portfolio

Wedding Breakfast Inspiration at The Bell Tower

For our styled shoot, the centre of The Bell Tower was transformed with a beautiful statement table, surrounded by candlelight, draping and florals. It felt luxurious but incredibly intimate — the sort of setting where dinner could become one of the most atmospheric parts of the entire wedding day.

And from a photographer’s perspective, candlelight in this space is gorgeous. Candles have a way of drawing your wedding guests in, and against the stone and soaring height of the room, all that warm light is incredibly flattering. It creates exactly the kind of rich, intimate and romantic wedding atmosphere I love to photograph.

Our shoot used one large statement table, but standing in the space I could easily imagine smaller tables dotted around it too, depending on what was possible for your particular celebration. There’s enough grandeur and height to create something dramatic, without losing that feeling of everyone being gathered together.

Couples would, of course, need to check with The Elvetham about the current options for holding a wedding breakfast inside The Bell Tower, but our shoot certainly showed just how spectacular the space can look when dressed for dinner.

And if I were getting married here? I’d be doing everything in my power to have my wedding breakfast and evening celebration in this same space. It was literally dripping with candlelight, atmosphere and romance.

Wedding Photography in The Elvetham Gardens

Stepping out of The Bell Tower and into the grounds gives you a completely different atmosphere. Where the interior is intimate, candlelit and dramatic, the gardens feel expansive, hugely romantic and wonderfully editorial.

What I particularly loved was how proudly The Bell Tower sits within the landscape. Rather than disappearing the moment you step outside, it becomes this incredible architectural backdrop. I loved being able to pull right back with my camera, placing the couple within the gardens while keeping The Bell Tower towering behind them. It gives the photographs a real sense of scale and, more importantly, a sense of where you actually are.

And lest we forget The Elvetham itself. Its grandeur cradles The Bell Tower without overpowering it, while giving us even more possibilities for wedding portraits if magnificent historic buildings are your vibe.

And if you’re planning a wedding at The Elvetham in Hampshire, PLEASE can I ask you to consider autumn? The reds and burnt, rusty tones of the climbing plants against that historic architecture make me want to light a lantern and demand that somebody prepare my horse immediately for a lantern-lit ride across the estate.

The formal gardens are incredibly photogenic too. Sculptural clipped evergreens, stone steps, established planting and strong architectural lines create all those wonderful layers that make a photograph feel considered without having to manufacture anything. I could have my couple sneeze while walking through the tree-lined corridor and they’d look ready for the cover of Vogue.

There are places for big, sweeping portraits, but also smaller corners that feel much more intimate. And I think that’s really the point I’m trying to make: you don’t have to choose between quiet and intimate or grand and magnificent here. You can have both.

For me, that’s where The Elvetham grounds really work. They already have that heightened, romantic quality that lends itself beautifully to editorial wedding photography.

You just have to put the couple into it.

The Elvetham Wedding Photography – Photographing The Bell Tower

As a wedding photographer, The Bell Tower at The Elvetham gives me so much of what I love to work with in one place — beautiful natural light, darker atmospheric corners, historic architecture, candlelight, texture and then acres of romantic grounds just outside the door.

What I loved most, though, was the contrast. Inside, you can create something intimate, dramatic and cinematic; step outside and suddenly you have space, greenery and those much bigger editorial portraits, with The Bell Tower itself rising proudly in the background.

Although my time at The Bell Tower was for a styled shoot rather than a real wedding, it left me genuinely wanting to come back and photograph a wedding day here. There are so many possibilities within what is actually a wonderfully intimate setting, and I suspect it’s one of those wedding venues that would look completely different depending on the couple who made it their own.

And perhaps that’s what I like most about it. The Bell Tower already has a personality, but it doesn’t demand that you have a particular one. Bring the candles. Bring the colour. Strip it right back. Fill it with flowers. Make it sleek, make it whimsical, make it completely and utterly yours.

And frankly, anywhere that looks that good by candlelight already has my vote.
